Aussie Fashion Icon

If let me use some words to describe Aussie; my answer will be “laid-back”, “relax”, “sporty”, “nurture”, “eco”, “organic” and so on. And I find all those elements are infused in Aussie’s fashion.

“Comfortable” is the key to the fashionable style here. This is so different from Asian culture; especially comparing with where I was from, Shanghai. With the metropolitan life style in Shanghai, inattentive dressing could be stereotyped as impolite, uneducated or clodhopper. Girls could scarify the feet comfort to suffer a pair of high hill. Yes, high hills are so vital for Shanghainese girls, I have strong feeling of my hills as well. So I came to Melbourne with my 25 pairs of hills together back 2007. Because the culture difference, I found I was bit of over-dressed at beginning of my uni-live. Of course, I have given up wearing my hills daily for long time.

The fashion strategy for footwear in Australian must be Thongs and UGG boots.

In China, we call thongs as slippers. Slippers were worn at home or backyard, so wearing slippers was not proper to go to the public such as shopping mart, cinema, or restaurant. I guess the Aussie fashion has been influencing Chinese as well; it’s not that strict rule about wearing slippers nowadays. But it’s still not suitable to school or office. Students probably would be prohibited to getting in school, because wearing slippers is recognize as inappropriate grooming.

In Australia, thongs are not only the comfortable footwear, but also an icon for Aussie’s fashion. Girls wear thongs and hot pats with nice tan skin they just get from sun-bake at beach. Thongs imply the beach, sports, and fun.
With these implications, Aussie has the reasons to wear thongs anywhere at anytime.

2.UGG Boots
I assume you probably have the same idea pop up in your mind; the icon of Aussie fashion must be UGG Australian Boots. Bingo! UGG Australian Boots are so popular these days. When I back my home town, I often get the enquiry of UGG Australian from my girlfriends. It looks you must have a pair of UGGs if you think you haven’t been OUT!!

The commercial branding strategy is quite successful for UGG Australian. But do you know the brand of UGG Australian boots are not from Australia? Do you know the boots couldn’t be called UGG outside of OZ and Kiwi? Do you the history of UGG boots?
*Ugg Boots Made in Australia

UGG boots were worn at rural area back 1920s in Australia, then adopted to surf activity in 1950s. The wife of one of sheepskin boots manufacture owner who commented the boots were ugly, then the owner named it as UGG boots. In early 1970s, an Australian went to US, and sold the boots and brand to the American company. This company registered “UGG Australian” as trademark in more than 140 counties. It was also not allowed to use “UGG Boots” in Australia until the Australian government set UGG as a craft process for the boots.

  2. Hi Annie,

I totally agree that Thongs are useful and common here. Specially, in the hot day, we go out with Thongs, how comfortable do we feel? Or in our uni, we can count how many students wear Thongs when they go to school?

I think this icon aslo comes from Australia's weather. Do you have the same opinion with me that the hot day in Melbourne is so dry....That is the reason why....lol.

    Anyways, Thanks for interesting topic!

    1. Thank you to visit my site, Loan.

Uh, I'm hesitate to agree your opinion about the hot weather to cause the Thongs culture. I think one could be the sports culture, since Aussie love water sports; thongs are very convenience and practical. The other could be the "laid-back" culture, there is no grooming rules for public. So people just don't care much.

With thongs, like I mentioned in my blogger, I still feel difficult to wear them for school or cinema. I'm getting relax to wear them for shopping in the market. lol!!

      Cheers,

      Annie

  3. Thank you for your comments, Lyn. You just put an interesting question to me, haha! In fact,I couldn't think a particular item for Shanghainese to wear as the icon. Majority girls in Shanghai these day, they dress quite delicate, match colour, jewelery and so on. But back 30-25 years ago, we have a very special unique icon, it called "Fake collar".

Back the old days, the resource were very limited under the planned economy in China;people bought goods with the specific voucher. For example, you need bring money and cotton voucher to buy the cotton material for your shopping. With these reason, people wasn't afford to buy lots of shirts. So the "Fake Collar" were invented in Shanghai. It was only half size of Shirt, people wore it under jacket. It didn't cost too much the limited voucher, but could allow you change shirts very day.

Since I could paster a photo to show you how the fake collar works, I just have the following URL (this's a Chinese site) to give you a rough idea how it looks.

  4. Hey hun very cute post about our iconic thongs and ugg boots - they are certainly the fashion 'must-have' at Swinburne! Don't think this would be applicable in the real world though - I have yet to meet anyone in meetings wearing anything else but closed toed shoes (boring I know but damn OHS!) As for your 25 pairs of heels, how did you choose which ones to bring to Australia with you? I struggled to reduce the number I brought over and I was only 8 years old! I am Filipino though #AKAImelda xoxo

  5. Thank you for your comments and question, Margau.

I still remember I struggled to pack my luggages so much. Just before I came to Aussie land, I moved back to my parents house with 25 parcels. So I really tried to pick the most useful stuff to bring here. In the end, I shipped 4 parcels with 20kg each, and carried 75kg luggages with me on the flight. Thanks a lot to one of my girlfriends, she is air hostess. We managed took a same flight to come Melbourne.

I picked the 25 pairs hills base on my idealistic Aussie life for the formal events, parties, smart casual, daily wearing in spring, summer and winter. Anyway, I don't think I had chance to wear all of them since I moved here. lol!!

I guess you must hope to bring your whole world here as a 8 years old girl. Although I was 29yrs old, it was very difficult.

    Cheers,

    Annie

  6. Thongs CAN be worn anywhere! I've been saying this for years... I must say I also gained a pair of ugg boots as a birthday present last year, and they are amazing in winter. I wear them every night. One complaint I heard about them is that they are too large and cumbersome to fit into luggage when you go away......... UNTRUE! The secret is you place items inside of them like undies and socks and that frees up room elsewhere!
That said, I think it's great you're getting into Aussie fashion and learning what trends are in. Best of luck with it, but just remember that trends go out of style quick here! You need to move fast.. haha
